Arpa receives the Hermes Creative Award for The Colours at Spirit Square Community Art Project

The community fence project highlights that The Colours at Spirit Square is a diverse, inclusive, and social development where neighbours look out for each other and live their best lives.

BACKGROUND

The Colours at Spirit Square is a mixed-use development located at the intersection of McDonald and Yew in Kamloops, B.C. Arpa Investments developed an art project to bring the community together to beautify their construction site fencing, while infusing a renewed sense of pride for an area that has been underutilized. The Colours’ marketing campaign “Bring Your Colour” is founded in the imagery of a colourful tapestry – a collection of diverse and unique personalities from across generations, coming together to create a community where neighbours meet to share a laugh, a coffee, or a heartfelt moment. The project highlights that The Colours at Spirit Square is a diverse, inclusive, and social development where neighbours look out for each other and live their best lives.

THE PROJECT

The community art project/signage consists of 240 plywood boards painted by community members and affixed to the construction fencing around the development site. Once The Colours construction is complete (Spring 2021) and the fencing is removed, the McDonald Park Community Association will repurpose the fence art for their community garden.

TIMING

The project/signage was unveiled during National Culture Days held from September 27-29, 2019 allowing for national exposure and tied in well to the Culture Days events being held at McDonald Park.

LOGISTICS

Arpa Investments purchased the supplies required for the community art project/signage. They then donated materials to the United Way, ASK Wellness, the YMCA, and the Boys and Girls Club to host paint events between August 25 and September 27.

COMMUNITY PAINT EVENTS

With the help of an artistic coordinator, we hosted community paint events to engage and inspire community participation.

OUTCOME

The project/signage is not only unique signage for the development, but also a successful collaboration between Arpa Investments, the North Shore Business Association, MacDonald Park Association, and non-profit organizations to create awareness for The Colours at Spirit Square and to unite the community in a revitalization project through artwork as signage.
